Quotes for writers

At this time of year it’s often difficult to focus on our writing projects with the onset of winter for many (and the extra hours of darkness that can zap our energy) as well as the holiday season.

Try reading quotes from other writers to keep you inspired.  Here are a few of my favorites:

I try to leave out the parts that people skip.
Elmore Leonard

Substitute “damn” every time you’re inclined to write “very;” your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.
Mark Twain

Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.
Anton Chekhov

Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.
Alfred Hitchcock

Sometimes you have to go on when you don’t feel like it, and sometimes you’re doing good work when it feels like all you’re managing is to shovel shit from a sitting position.
Stephen King

We do not write because we want to; we write because we have to.
Somerset Maugham

Exercise the writing muscle every day, even if it is only a letter, notes, a title list, a character sketch, a journal entry. Writers are like dancers, like athletes. Without that exercise, the muscles seize up.
Jane Yolen

Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.
T. S. Eliot

Detail makes the difference between boring and terrific writing. It’s the difference between a pencil sketch and a lush oil painting. As a writer, words are your paint. Use all the colors.
Rhys Alexander

Any word you have to hunt for in a thesaurus is the wrong word.  There are no exceptions to this rule.
Stephen King

It is by sitting down to write every morning that one becomes a writer.
